n00b

n00b is leet speak for a newcomer who is clueless.
It originally comes from Newcomer, which was turned into slang as a Newbie, Newby or a Newb. Later it was modified into leetspeak as n00b.

According to some sources, it’s earliest origins are probably related to military jargon of the 20th century. Newby may have been a shortened slang version for the new boy on the line, which then was further shortened to Newb.

Today it is usually used to describe a beginning computer user, often referencing a lack of skill at computer gaming. Although it often has derogatory connotations, it is also sometimes used for descriptive purposes, without rendering a value judgment.

The most common neutral translation of n00b would be an amateur.
